Great season, shame Liverpool messed it up in the final stretch. But still it was a lot of fun.
Read a good article in one of the Sunday papers over here on Sunday putting forward the argument that Gerrard has been overrated for a long time.
I'll post a link when it's up on their website.
One thing that has been pointed out about him throughout his career is that there were countless times he tried to play a Hollywood pass that ended up in the stands or out for a throw in when a simple 5 yard pass would have opened up the opposing team.

For me he has been a great player overall.
Gerrard has always been a superb player IMO. Anyone can just do short passes but Gerrard is able to do those incredible long passes and through balls that lead to so many goal scoring opportunities. Sure he might miss sometimes but the fact that he attempts them sets him out from the rest for me.
He's also extremely versatile. I mean from an attacking midfielder almost playing like a no.10 alongside Torres to playing with the back four this season as a quarterback he's been amazing. The whole reason the Liverpool system of pushing the full backs in front and spreading the centre halfs has worked because he's been there. Also the challenges and tackles he makes are almost 90% of the time spot on.
It's easy to criticise IMO, don't think anyone's perfect. Not even the likes of Ronaldo, Messi etc. Plus some of these critics just like to find fault. He's been a solid player for years now. That sort of consistency can't be overlooked. For me he's a great player to have in your team. He's what you call a game changer. Perfect example being this past Sunday, Liverpool a goal down. Two Gerrard free kicks perfectly delivered. BOOM..two goals.
Wish United could sign him haha.

But the simple short passes would have cut open a defence and lead to a goal but he chose the flash option. Saw a great highlights package about him a few years back and it was staggering the amount of times he went Hollywood and ended up looking like a tit.
He has been a wonderful player but he has been guilty of going missing at times but not to the extent of Yaya Toure who is probably the most overrated player in football at the moment.
Gerrard is a top top player but I stand by my side of the argument. The British media heaped a lot of pressure on him over the years proclaiming him to be better than he is but any player who is English and talented will get over hyped by the red tops.
As England are my nearest neighbour on the map I hope they do well in the WC but with Uruguay and Italy in their group I'd fear for their chances.

I'm pretty sure that can be said of any player.
Not saying he's perfect, no one is or that he's the best there is but he's certainly up there.

You made some great points man and I agree he is a top player. Maybe we can park this for now!
One final point I would add is that Gerrard shining this season had a lot to do with Jordan Henderson who quietly went about his business this season.
That guy will be world class in a few years if Rodgers keeps doing what he is doing with him.
Brilliant choice in my opinion, also with Giggs as his assistant. The style of play that Van Gaal plays with previous teams is the United way, wingers and attacking football. He won't take no shit either, I always felt Moyes was a soft touch at United and looked like a shitting dog in every interview. The defence needs a new back four, Smalling, Jones and Rafael just ain't good enough and Evans is decent for cover but by no means the first name on the team sheet. Cleverley, Young, Anderson and Nani need to go, i'd even pay the train fair for Young he's about as much use as a lighthouse in the desert! Fucking useless and Hernandez needs to play more, I love that guy!
Really glad Van Gaal's letting him stay on as assistant manager. At least he's not making the same mistakes Moyes made by reshuffling the whole backroom staff. Good sign to start off with.
