Btw what you've just said is the stereotypical perception of Twitter. It's infact a great source of news and keeping yourself updated. Also you can follow people who are interested in the same things you are, basically it's like the forum experience only at a much larger scale. I like it becasue there's so much information there to be had. I follow a ton of news outlets, journalists, writers, musicians, actors and various websites on there and they constantly post the most intriguing articles, views etc. It's also a bit of fun, I follow a few parody accounts of Game Of Thrones characters and even Darth Vader and they tweet about stuff like current events in character. Or something else like I follow some football related accounts who post about transfers, rumours, news, interviews and a lot of jokes, videos and pics.
Twitter is the ultimate, fastest news source IMO and the best part is you can follow things that interest you. So you get a feed which is customised to your tastes.
Also like they say, don't dish it till you've tried it.

yeah yeah...good...I get your point...but you're suggesting a very narrow (and useful) application tailored to your own interests...I'm talking about every Tom, Dick and Mary who believe that the world just hangs on knowing whether or not their Aunt Phoebe is banging the auto mechanic who lives in the shipping container at the edge of town or exciting new trends in the research of cat litter...we're just not...

See that's the thing, I don't see any of those people's tweets because I don't follow them. That's the beauty, you choose what it is you see on there. I hate those kind of tweets as much as the next guy but I never have to read them because I don't follow such people. That's why it's so successful, you choose the content you want to see.
