Just finished watching episode 6, another hour of absolute brilliance! The episode ended on a great note, now I think Rust and Marty will finally try to figure out what the hell is going on. I really liked this episode since it dealt more with their personal problems than the case itself. It was a nice change and finally brought the story up to the present day. Should be great to see how they make the two of them work together which I'm sure they'll do(duh!). Though somehow I sense a major twist coming at the end, can't wait for next week!
"Who'll pick you up when you're spread too thin, when the walls you built are closing in around you? I found you...."
Episode 7 was just a build up IMO to the finale which is obviously going to be insane! Though I enjoyed the episode it was the least exciting of the entire series so far. Anyway I'm sad and excited for the last episode. Can't believe after next week there'll be no more True Detective to look forward to.

totally agree, one of THE best shows ever, up there with the greats. Every aspect you could wish for was present, from amazing cinematography to a truly great script, but when it comes to those two central performances, really, what can you say to do them both justice?

I really enjoyed it but it has the advantage over most (American) shows as it was limited to 8 episodes. They were able to tell a singular story with a clear end in sight. They didnt have to stretch the show out over 50 episodes so they could write an entire series without drifting off into unnecessary story lines. The career turnaround by matthew mcconaughey is pretty incredible. He was once a guy I would change the channel on but has turned into a fabulous actor. I was bummed when he was cast in the new Christopher Nolan movie but now I'm pretty excited for it.
The finale was absolutely brilliant just like the whole show. I was literally on the edge of my seat. I think it ended perfectly with Rust and Marty patching up and actually becoming friends. I think I mostly expected Rust or even Marty to die at the end but I'm glad they didn't go down that route. It would've been the easy way out IMO. Also if anything McConaughey deserves an Oscar just for this role, superb performance throughout. Can't believe how engrossing this show was and I agree sternumman it helped that the show was limited to 8 episodes and that they had a proper end in sight so we didn't have to sit through hours of filler. Looking forward to season 2 now.
BTW just to let everyone know, I read an interview of Nic Pizzolatto and he confirmed that he's reserved the rights to the characters of Cohle and Marty. So we just might see these two great characters again!

where did it say the second season will be without them? I can't see such a great pairing put out to grass so quickly...
They made that very clear right from the start. The show follows an Anthology format. Each season is independent from the other and so each season will have its own new cast, characters and storylines.

It'll be an Emmy not an oscar.
I doubt they'll be back. The idea of the show was to have it limited to eight episodes so they can have big stars do it. Mcconaughey is too in demand now to do more tv. Plus neither of them are cops anymore. I'd like to see new characters next year but It'll be hard to live up to the hype.
