Today, Pitchfork.tv shares a new segment of "Over/Under", the interview series in which artists evaluate a series of random topics, declaring if they're overrated or underrated. This time, we sat down with Arctic Monkeys, whose new album AM is out this week through Domino. For this episode, watch as Alex Turner and Matt Helders discuss their feelings on Betty White, sneakers that light up, porkpie hats (fun fact: Turner dressed up as Walter White from "Breaking Bad" for Halloween), Fifty Shades of Grey, expensive soap, and more.
I've also had it on repeat since the first time I heard it. There's not one song on the album that I don't like or feel like skipping, now that is something!
"Who'll pick you up when you're spread too thin, when the walls you built are closing in around you? I found you...."
May have been too harsh on this at first, although I pretty much still stand by my point.
It's good, but I consider Arctic Monkeys one of the best big current bands, and this record doesn't really reflect that. It's all very listenable (like Vampire Weekend or something) but seldom brilliant. Lacking in the edge their other albums had.
Maybe my expectations were too high, from the singles I was really hoping that this would be their defining, brilliant album. I got the opposite, a career low for me.
Each to their own like, but i think your way off the mark. Career low my arse. EVERY track IS brilliant. Album is varied and class all the way through. And gets better everytime you hear it.
They just don't make bad records, and this album is more proof of that.
And they're not one of the best, they ARE THE BEST. FULL STOP.
After a few days listening back to it, it's started to grow on me quite a bit. I think my favourite songs on the album are Do I Wanna Know?, Arabella, Snap Out of It, Knee Socks and One For The Road.
I am really impressed with the way this album sounds. Alex was right, very hip-hop. Very modern. I dig.
Admittedly only just the one listen so far, but I didn't get a hip hop feel at all.
and I thought it was a bit samey to be honest, I do think it sound much more of a 'band' record though, and I reckon the rest of them don't really get the kudos they deserve for what they bring to Alex's songs.
I don't think Mad Sounds gets enough love to be honest, so i'm gonna give some
I FUCKING <3 MAD SOUNDS
Mad sounds and No 1 party anthem are some of the band's greatest ballads.
Speaking of the RnB and hip hop feel you can hear it on tracks like One for the road and Why'd you only call me when you're high? that's for sure. Touches and flashes here and there on other songs but those two tracks are the most obvious.
NME's 10/10 review isn't looking too silly now.
The Album has sold more copies in two days then SIAS did in a week. That's Impressive.
