Bowie is an artist i've never really got into, i've tried so many times with his albums but it's never really clicked for me, I have no doubt he's done some brilliant stuff tho but it's just one of them artists that i'm afraid has passed me by. I have the same taste in music to our old boy and he has never got into him so at least i'm not the only one.
I did like him in Extra's tho. Pathetic little fat man
And then started with Hunky Dory. Hope this helps!
Despite what I said before about listening to studio albums first, I did hand-pick some songs off this first. I'd hear them in YouTube related videos, become infatuated with them for a few days each, look for them on iTunes and see that they were all on this collection. That was when I wasn't sure how deep I wanted to get in with this Bowie thing. I only really got into him when I bought my first two albums of his (Hunky Dory and Ziggy) but that's just how I am, I need to put things in context of album but sure, the best of album is a great place to start

I've been meaning to get into Bowie as well. Actually listening to the only album of his I have, The Next Day as I type this. Thanks for the suggestions mate!
Sweet avatar! Would have been even better if you'd got one of those GIFs I've seen where he does that little despairing look at the camera, that's awesome
Thanks mate! Frank Underwood is the man! I'll see if I can find that GIF as well, save it for my next av.

theyknowwhatimean Though I have been listening to a lot of The Next Day since that's the one I have . Absolutely loving it, superb album! My dad who's not that into Bowie himself is also interested now.

oh, forgot to mention that the whole 'rolling into victoria Station dressed as a Nazi and giving a hitler salute' thing seems to get glossed over these days, along with his comprentaneous comments about Britain needing 'a strong leader' due to 'moral decline' and 'democracy not working' etc, at a time when Eric Clapton was voicing support for the right wing National Front at his concerts and supporting repatriation. One bandwagon jump for Mr Bowie too far that one eh?

Yeah, The Next Day was the first album I heard from him as well. I remember being astounded when I first heard it on the iTunes stream by how much it rocked, tunes like How Does the Grass Grow you'd expect of a much younger man. After hearing Where Are We Now (which has grown on me massively) and hearing his voice sound so frail coming from only having previously listened to Life On Mars - pretty much his most popular song recorded at the peak of his powers, I expected a bit of a train-wreck like Macca and so many aged stars, but I gave it a listen nonetheless just because of all the furore around his sudden comeback. Yes, his voice had undoubtedly aged (trust me, his vocals in his prime were sommat else), but he managed to make it work and tunes like Valentines Day as Noely G said are examples of just great songwriting and if it wasn't for the state of things at the moment, I reckon that'd've been a big hit for him. Great tune.
From there I got Hunky Dory and Ziggy and those tunes I mentioned before off the best of... album and it went from there. Funnily enough, my dad has had a listen n all and he's into it almost as much as me now.
Anyway, I hope you and your dad get even some of the enjoyment I've had in the last few months delving into Bowie's back catalogue.

I of course don't condone his actions there, but he was doing copious amounts of cocaine at the time, you can't expect him to be in the best frame of mind living in that state.

Just want to chime in late to recommend the two-dvd Best of Bowie music video collection. Can't go wrong with that, as it has a little from every "era", and half the fun of Bowie is the crazy shit he wears and his weird videos/stage antics. Very, very visual artist with very well-thought-out symbolism in his performances.
