With Liams solo debut on the horizon, lets take a look back at Beady Eye. This is only going to look long because of the videos, I'm shit with words so theres only going to be a handful of sentences spread about.
Our first glimpse of Beady Eye at work was this picture and then this video.
At this point, I was in Grade 12. I didn't have much knowledge of anything Oasis Fan Related, I had 0 clue there were forums filled with people hyped as much as I was for this simple video. The only thing I knew about was our Jims wonderful blog.
That riff, sublime. The band looks cool as fuck and suddenly almost 2 weeks later we're hit with thistune bombshell.
I was confused as fuck, it was 2AM or something, Monday, I had school the next day but I stayed awake just to listen to this.
FOR THIS??
In that time of waiting, listening to that riff I built this epic song of a stampede in my head and we get whatever the hell this is. My mom has insomnia, so shes awake and listened to the song with me, she was digging it while I'm sitting there wondering what happened to that epic riff. Looking back I really enjoy this one, as repetitive as it gets. We get the song with the cool riff shortly afterwards as Sons Of The Stage, but it fucks with my head again. Its not some grand song, its a cover of some groovy song stuck in the 80s but released in the 90s with the riff randomly dropped in the middle. It too grew on me shortly afterwards.
A month later, in 10 seconds, all my faith in Beady Eye is restored with this.
I remember being blown away by that riff and how this was the type of song I was expecting from Beady Eye, this became one of my favorites instantly. I was baffled by World Outside My Room, it was a Liam we've never heard before.
Not long into the new year we're greeted with The Roller, I don't remember my initial thoughts when I watched this but it became one of my most listened to songs by Beady Eye. Having only 1 friend who shared interest, I shoved whatever they released into his face and he used this as his Graduation Song.
At this point, I'm 100% sure the albums leaked out and everyones trashing it. I'm just waiting for it to officially release because stuff leaking out never once crossed my mind ever. When it finally came out I was at school, thinking like "Shit, its out and everyones hearing it but me.", luckily the school hired a cool Teacher that year who was an Oasis fan like me and he even saw them live a couple times in the 90s. In between periods I go to him like "ITS HERE ITS HERE, GIVE ME YOUR COMPUTER!".
I listen to it for about 2 weeks before making a random post somewhere on the internet of my official review of it. Its hard for me to remember what I thought of it back then but I found my shitty review and why the fuck is my writing so awful, no structure, no punctuation and I Capitalize Every Word In My Sentence For No Reason. I talk about how everyones comparing it to Oasis and how I won't do that only to compare it to Rock n Roll Star as an opening track. Almost every track I say I don't know what its about but its okay. My least favorites were and is still For Anyone and Beatles and Stones, I can't get into them. I didn't like Wigwam until they played it live. My favorites from DGSS would be Two Of A Kind, Wigwam, Four Letter Word and Three Ring Circus. I think the rest are solid, YES. EVEN THAT SONG. I forgot about Bubble With A Bullet, thats super close to being one of their best songs, but its missing something.

Lucky for me, I was graduating that year. My parents asked me if I wanted to go on a trip or anything, Beady Eye were playing a gig across the country from me in Toronto the week before I graduated. I was able to stay at my rich aunts house and go see them live. The opening band was awful, snoozefest. I was 2 people behind the front row on Gems side and as the opening band was playing Liam and Co came out and watched them from the sidelines. Me and a bunch of people were waving at them, they waved back and told us to watch the guys on stage.
I remember I forgot how short Yellow Tail was because there was an extended version made with an audience recording. I was like "Holy crap they're coming on now, they're right there in front of me right now!" My first concert was Beady Eye there, it was awesome. I got into the after party but I had to leave early because my Aunt had work the next day. I found out later that Gem and Andy showed up probably as soon as I left. I even took me Beady Eye and Heavy Stereo Vinyls with me, but they remain unsigned.
Two years later we're greeted with this.
Everyone and their mothers are freaking out HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THAT SYMBOLISM BEADY EYE IS THE SHARK EATING THE HIGH FLYING BIRD WHATDOESITMEANWHATDOESITMEANWHATDOESITMEAN??? Noels Debut Album was out and nearly everyone preferred it over Beady Eye (Me included) so this seemed like a bold statement from Beady Eye.
I really want to like this song, I do. It starts off strong but I feel like it peaks at 1:30-2:00 then it drags itself on for way too long. Liam sounds great here btw.
Shine A Light is probably my favorite song off BE, which I have the unpopular opinion of its weaker than Different Gear, Still Speeding. Much of BE sounds too similar to me, all the acoustic stuff, Face The Crowd and I'm Just Saying. The few songs I do still like from BE would be Flick Of The Finger, Iz Rite and Shine A Light. The rest is just eh.
Oh yeah theres bonus tracks. Back After The Break and Off At The Next Exit are pretty good, I think Off At The Next Exit is probably the best of the acoustic stuff from BE. I completely forgot about Girls In Uniform and Evil Eye. Evil Eye is probably my 2nd favorite acoustic track off BE.
Unfortunately it was all downhill as they went off on tour again, they looked good, sounded good, but they encountered so many problems with Gems crazy accidents and Liams personal life going haywire.
Was Beady Eye a good band? Kinda. Did anyone name their kids Beady Eye? I doubt it. Beady Eyes strongest songs can stand up against some Oasis songs, but is The Beat Goes On, The Masterplan 2.0? God no, who even started that debate? I am very happy Beady Eye happened though, I got to see Liam Gallagher live! I got to hear more songs from my favorite guitarist Gem Archer.
I have very VERY linear taste is music, I'll gladly listen to the same songs over and over again from Beady Eye over finding something new. I just BARELY missed out on seeing Oasis live in 2008, had no clue who they were then. So seeing Beady Eye start from the ground up was the greatest thing ever for me at the time.
I thank them for that.
