Was just digging through some 05 era stuff last night and in that Channel 4 Presents interview with Colin Murray, Noel was saying it was their best album since DM/MG.
I know he or Liam said this pretty much every time they released an album in the 00s but it reminded me that at the time of DBTT's release this was pretty much what everyone was saying and it got some pretty stellar reviews.
Was it really that good though? I liked Lyla but it wasn't their strongest lead single (and Liam struggled vocally with it on pretty much every live performance), I was one of the few who didn't (and still don't) love The Importance of Being Idle and I felt Let There Be Love was a by-numbers ballad.
Out of the album tracks I really like Mucky Fingers and Part of the Queue is decent (although I feel The Song Remains the Same is almost a better version of the same idea). I used to love Keep The Dream Alive and Turn Up The Sun has great verses let down by an average chorus.
Looking back, I prefer it to Dig Out Your Soul - but was it really deserving of the hype and rave reviews it got at the time?
I was not into Oasis then, but when, years too late, I then tried them out, to see if we might be friends after all, it was DBTT that sealed the deal for me. Loved the whole album from the first second and do to this day. And finally became officially besotted by Oasis then. "Lyla", funnily enough, for me is maybe the weakest song here.
DBTT is a top album, I remember that the singer from my former Oasis tribute, who wasn't really a diehard fan of the band (now we have a fan acting as 'Liam'), used to absolutely dig it. He said it was his favourite Oasis album. I really think it is even underrated. It's so good, the songs are so mature and the live versions are perfect. Lyla is a stomping belter, I just love the way it's so hypnotic and it's among the songs I prefer to play live.
Italian mad for it. Oasis: Firenze 24.02.2009 - Beady Eye: Milano 16.03.2011, Firenze 08.06.2011 Roma 07.10.2011 - Noel Gallagher: Roma 13.03.2012 - Liam Gallagher: Milano 26.02.2018, Taranto 08.06.2019
Turn Up the Song is one of their best openings in an album. TIOBI is one of their greatest. Part of the Queue, and specially Keep the Dream Alive, are two of their two most underrated songs. Lyla? it´s ok. The rest? Average songs.
It´s a crime what they did with Let There Be Love. A great song totally ruined by their intention of doing a cheessy song. Believe me: I´ve never heard the song in its full. I just can´t... awful.
Other point: the sound. I don´t know if I´m wrong, but the sound of some songs doesn´t match the song itself. For example: POTQ sounds ok, and the sound matches the ¨kind of song¨, same with Turn Up The Sun. But Love Like a Bomb... it sounds just not right. Not even talk about Let There Be Love: the drums are awful.
In my opinion.. it's quite a weak album, something about the whole thing just doesn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, it has some half-decent songs, like any other of their albums do, such as TIOBI and Let there be love, the latter being one of their best later songs in my personal opinion.
It's not their worst album, but nowhere near their best.
I enjoyed the album to be fair, I remembered loving Lyla when it was first broadcast on this foreign radio station then loved hearing it live, it always got a great reaction even tho Liam was shouting and not singing. It always reminds me of summer does this album as well, think it's got a great start with Turn Up The Sun, used to love the intro to that at gigs. I think looking back at it nearly 15 years later it's not the best Oasis album, it's one I very rarely go back to but at the time I did play it to death. The Importance of Being Idle is such a good summer song as well.
Used to love the buzz when a new Oasis album was coming out as well, don't really get that excited for any new releases these days, i'm more excited for the reissues of classic albums.

Ha, yeah - seem to remember it was some Polish radio station that leaked Lyla. Had that version for ages. Funnily enough was thinking the other day how excited I used to get about Oasis-related releases - even just the singles. Sign of getting old!

I think it's a good album. It has some great tracks on it. TUTS, Lyla, IOBI, GGTIA are all great tunes. It's probably the best album from the later part of the bands career. I don't listen to it much these days as it takes me back to a period of my life i would rather forget

Usually your summer was planned around Oasis when a new album was announced along with the tour, I remember back to 2000 when I wasn’t on a good wage but somehow managed to make it to 5 or 6 of the big stadium gigs, the tickets wasn’t that expensive back then and you wasn’t really fussed about where you ended up sleeping. The last time I got excited for a gig since Oasis split was The Stone Roses reunion gigs at Heaton Park and to be fair that did live up to the hype. I remember DBTT leaking as well, had a shit dial up connection at the time and it took me ages to download. That was around the time I bought a DVD recorder and ended up recording nearly everything Oasis related around then.
