Has anyone got the pictures of these demo tapes that were sold last year through Britpop Store? I have a picture of the one which includes "For One So Young" but not the others.
Thanks for posting this Jim. Yes, definitely 1994... this looks to be a cassette copy of the first mix of the Sawmills Sessions, which was done at Eden Studios between 7th-25th March 1994. Mixed by Anjali Dutt and co-produced by NG and Mark Coyle. Aside from I am the Walrus, I believe all of the mixes on that tape appear on the Safety Masters (Anjali confirms that most of the tracks on the 4-disc set are from the first mix of the Sawmills sessions). Hope this helps.

I meant to send you that picture a wee while ago David, I just came across it again on the laptop earlier this evening.
Thanks for posting this Jim! There's quite a mystery behind this tape, which I've been trying to piece together. Not got too far yet but will post what I have later. I think it's related to the band's first TV appearance - the lost one mentioned in Tony McCarroll's book.
That alternative One Way Road is an interesting curiosity is it not, I wasn't even aware of it's existence until a couple of days ago. And the "pre-vocal" line on the sleeve hints that Noel would have, and maybe did, put down a vocal track on it. That'd be interesting to hear, as the little clip really points toward an track that was always meant to be an instrumental.
I think the Take Me tape linked to above might be the one which they mimed to in their first (now lost) TV appearance. This is the one described to great comedic effect by Tony McCarroll in his book, where Liam was none too pleased with host Alvin Stardust's introduction. There's some confusion over what programme this was for and when it was recorded, so I created a thread asking about this over on the Missing Episodes Forum. No solution to the mystery but there is some promising info in there from various contributors: missingepisodes.proboards.com/thread/6700/oasiss-1st-appearance-nose-lost
Paolo Hewitt's Getting High seems to suggest this performance may have been on 22 June 1992. No mention of this being a TV programme but it sounds like it could be one to me. The other details given by Hewitt correspond well with the info in Tony McCarroll's book.
"The Playback Roadshow was an event that formed part of a nationwide drive to raise money for various charities. Martin, Bonehead's brother, knew the festival organiser and persuaded him to let Oasis play the day-long festival, which also featured acts such as Opus 3 and the Utah Saints. After performing, Oasis handed over a tape to be auctioned of Take Me, featuring two mixes. They also autographed the cassette cover." (Hewitt, page 176).
The fax from Bonehead in the eil.com link posted above mentions that the band would be up for performing at a Telethon on 18th July. Could that be the actual date of the lost TV performance? Here's a transcript of the blurred text on the fax. "Dear Shirl.....
There is 5 of us... 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drums + Liam... Our music is very guitar based... We are up for doing Preston Sept 6th or Telethon 18th July and anything else you might have. We're not contactable through this fax machine but if you need us ring 227 952 (Paul) 257 5427 (Noel) or [unreadable] if you need me.
18th July 1992 was the date of the ITV Telethon that year, which was indeed a "nationwide drive to raise money for various charities". Each ITV region (Granada in this case) would have had their own events of which some bits would have been broadcas in both the regional and networked main programme.
Hi! Regarding the pictures of early demotapes, I can further contribute this Ignition-promotape of Cigarettes & Alcohol ("presumably" the "Hit The North"-version from August 1993, already discussed over at the L4E-forum), which was sold at The Britpop Store around a year ago too...just wanted to add something to this incredibly interesting discussion, maybe someone might be able to reveal more!
