David, on your points about Married With Children and the two available versions. Another of OasisDNA's tapes posted in this thread has Married With Children marked with an astrix as a Noel vocal.
Have any of the people you have interviewed / been in contact ever mentioned a recording before?
I think we need to kidnap OasisDNA and raid his collection!!
Thanks for the heads up Jim, I'd forgotten about that tape! Yeah, his collection is quite amazing and he seems to have a close connection with the band. Some of those items are priceless one-offs.
No I hadn't seen the Noel-sung Married With Children demo documented anywhere else, and no one I've spoken to so far has mentioned it either.
So that brings Married With Children up to three versions, the OasisDNA version, plus the two mixes of the Liam-sung album take. I can imagine Noel's version being another acoustic run-through taped around the same time as the She's Electric demo (here seemingly referred to as Need More Time...)
I'd still really like to interview Mark Coyle for the site at some point, I'm sure he'd be able to give us a lot of info and context for these early demos.
I'm assuming that version 1 of Shakermaker on OasisDNA's tape is the demo recorded in October 1993 at Out of the Blue Studios.
The "Lead guitar up" and "Slide Mix" are most likely from the later session at Out of the Blue (17th-18th April 1994) where Mark Coyle confirms they did additional work "tarting up" the demo (source: Melody Maker's 1st October 1994 article on the Making of Definitely Maybe). The "Slide Mix" is probably the version included as a bonus track on the Japanese version of the Definitely Maybe reissue.
The tracking sheets on display at the Chasing the Sun exhibition in Tokyo indicate two versions of Shakermaker from Out of the Blue. I've transcribed the text below, working from screengrabs from this YouTube video.
and then, it looks like the tracking sheets proves that the other versions of Shakermaker aren't fake. I'm assuming that the first is for "Lead Guitar Up" and the Second for "Slide Mix"?. I think that the "Slide Mix" is the "Slide Up Mix" before being officialized also.
It would be great if you add another input with a Mark Coyle interview, about this Shakermarker versions and the OasisDNA tapes.
I think we need to kidnap OasisDNA and raid his collection!!
Great Idea Jim, The OasisDNA collection includes the follow tape-cds that we don't have:
The Oasis Demo's Tape (have the three versions of Shakermarker)
The OasisDNA Tape: a mix of Live Demonstration Demo Tape, Whatever Demo Tape, First Demo Tape plus other Noel Sung Demos (Need More Time and Married With Children)
¿¡THE MUSTIQUE DEMOS TAPE!?: he is one of the only ones that have the legendary tape actually
The Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants ¿98? Demos Cd-r (have the alternative version of One Way Road)
The Honeybus version of High Flying Birds was allegedly the same as the 2010 Demos CD from which joakim kindly shared the 4 unreleased tracks but "rougher" sounding.
At the time I believed, and still to this day it may have been the demos Noel let Sardy hear before deciding to redo the drumming over in LA.
It would be great if OasisDNA would sign up and do us a review of each tape / CD. I wouldn't expect him to upload the music as he seems to have a good relationship with members of the bands inner circle (it would be great if he did drop something though haha) but certainly some information on the songs would be excellent.
Oasis - SECC '97. Edinburgh '00. Glasgow Green '00. Barrowlands '01. Finsbury '02. Hampden '05. City of Manchester '05. SECC '05. SECC '08. Heaton Park '09.
Beady Eye - T in The Park '11. ABC Glasgow '13. Barrowlands '13.
Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - SECC '12. The Hydro '15. Bellahouston Park '16. The Hydro '18. The Playhouse '19. Nottingham '23.
Liam Gallagher - The Barrowlands '17. The Hydro '17. Finsbury '18. The Hydro '19. Knebworth '22.

He genuinely seems to OWN every single rare demotape and cd that has appeared since early 2013, even uncovering some new ones. All of them are one-offs. I doubt he's in possesion of the Mustique demos though, he's set that point clear on Facebook a while ago, saying that he had the chance to listen to them while visiting Brian Cannon. Anyway, agreed - how great would it be, if he could offer us some insight. He's registered on L4E and had already provided some scarce information.

Thanks for posting all the info, David! On a second thought, I tend to believe that all of the 5 tracks on that tape were recorded and mixed (the 3 versions of Shakermaker) or just mixed/completed (the b-side/White Label version of Columbia, which you had confirmed a few aweeks ago and whatever version of Married With Children it might be) at Out Of The Blue in October 1993.
I just find it hard to believe, by looking at the sheer handmade design of the tape which kind of resembles the 1991/92 tape, that they'd distribute such a compilation at this point in time. After all, they were in the midst of recording and mixing Definitely Maybe for the second/third time in April 1994. So I guess the "Lead Guitar Up" mix and "Slide (Up) Mix", the latter was very probably released on the Japanese import of the DM reissue, might indeed have been recorded at Out Of The Blue in 1993.
To support this, there's also still this mysterious Cigarettes & Alcohol demotape, presumably from late 1993/early 1994 that had already spotted the official Ignition logo and contact details on its J-card. I would assume that an Oasis demotape compiled in April 1994, even if only produced for internal use, would have looked similar.
Good points asimarx, thanks for posting. Just trying to put together some more notes on Shakermaker but it's taking a while.
You reminded me of a discussion back in 2013 on L4E, in which Jim kindly posted a link to an auction listing of a cassette containing three versions of Shakermaker, said to have been given to the vendor in 1993. This was the link: www.ukauctioneers.com/auction_houses/371/sales/3736?page=14
(unfortunately the URL now redirects to the site's home page and the listing appears to have been removed from the site. I tried the Wayback Machine but got the same result ). Anyway, I'm thinking those three mixes are likely the ones on OasisDNA's tape... and in fact it may even be the same cassette in his collection. The date given by the vendor supports the theory that the three mixes of Shakermaker were indeed from the original October 1993 session at Out of the Blue.

I positively say that is the same cassette, if you look carefully the second image (edited in the original post) the tape have the same hadwritten track list. I saved the picture from that page.
But, on the other hand I don't remember what is the content of the Cd -in the lower left corner-.
In this post I've tried to put together my notes so far on Shakermaker - the known studio recordings are given in bold headings, in as close as I can get to chronological order at the moment. It's a bit convoluted but I hope it may be of some use here. Anyway...
1 - 3. Initial demo recording (three mixes) (Out of the Blue Studios, Manchester; October 1993). Notes: In Jeff Collins’s book Rock Legends at Rockfield the photographer Michael Spencer Jones says that the first pictures he took of Oasis were 'at the Out of the Blue studios in Manchester, where they were doing a demo of the song Shakermaker… that cemented the relationship and they asked me to work on the cover for their first single Supersonic’ (p. 122). No date is mentioned there, but from the context this must pre-date the Monnow Valley sessions (which started early January 1994), as Spencer Jones took what became the cover image of Supersonic during that session. Also the website for Spencer Jones’s book Out of the Blue mentions that he first photographed the band at the studio of that name in 1993. Link: www.spellboundpublications.com/index.htmlOn 7th September 2012 I was lucky enough to speak to Michael, who kindly checked his records and confirmed that the demo was recorded at Out of the Blue in October 1993. live4ever.proboards.com/thread/72193/mcgee-auction-early-oasis-recordings
Two Out of the Blue studios tracking sheets for Shakermaker were recently on display at the Chasing the Sun Oasis exhibition in Tokyo, and can be seen briefly in the video below.
I'm assuming that one of the Shakermaker tracking sheets relates to the initial demo session and the other to the later session (mentioned by Mark Coyle in the 1/10/1994 issue of Melody Maker), in which additional work was done on the demo.
On 30th April 2015 OasisDNA (collector Brian Garcia) posted a picture to his Instagram account of an Oasis demo cassette from his collection, which features three mixes of Shakermaker.
The original auction listing for this cassette stated that it was given to the vendor in 1993, supporting the theory that those three mixes were from the October 1993 session at Out of the Blue. For reference, the mixes of Shakermaker thought to have been completed during this session:
1. Version # 1. 2. "Lead Guitar Up" mix of demo. 3. "Slide Mix" of demo.
The "Slide Mix" (track 3) is likely a different title for the "Slide Up mix" included on the Japanese reissue of Definitely Maybe released in 2014.
4. Monnow Valley recording (Monnow Valley Studio, Wales; January 1994). Notes: A Monnow Valley tracking sheet for Shakermaker was recently on display at the Chasing the Sun exhibition in Tokyo. Recording engineer Dave Scott commented on this separate recording when I interviewed him for my site, recalling that "We did record Shakermaker at Monnow Valley and I remember it sounding quite good compared to some of the other songs." Full interview: www.oasis-recordinginfo.co.uk/?page_id=588
5. Remix of initial demo (Out of the Blue Studios, 17-18 April 1994) The issue of Melody Maker published on 1st October 1994 contains an article by Cliff Jones called 'Diary of an LP: Definitely Maybe'. Here's the relevant section:
"Out of the Blue Studios, Manchester 17-18 April 1994 (Shakermaker and Cigarettes and Alcohol) Sessions recorded on a TAC Magnum desk with Otari 24-track
Mark Coyle: "Shakermaker is the demo tarted up. It had such a brilliant feel we couldn't think about doing it again. No gates and none of this limiting bollocks on there, just maximum sound to tape."
Note: I assume that one of the tracking sheets on display at the Chasing the Sun exhibition in Toyko relates to this session, although no date is visible on either. As far as I can tell the version worked on in this session is not currently in circulation.
6. Owen Morris mix of demo, with Coke line (Matrix Studios, London; 2nd May 1994). Notes: Owen Morris mixed the bulk of the album at Matrix Studios from 2/5/94 to 5/4/94 (Sources: various, including Melody Maker article, 1/10/94, Owen Morris Q magazine interview, 2010). This would have contained his mix of Shakermaker, albeit with the original third verse. The book that comes with the deluxe edition of Definitely Maybe shows a picture of the half-inch, 30ips master tape from Matrix Studios containing Owen's mix of Shakermaker (and Slide Away), dated 2nd May 1994.
7. Abbey Road reference CD-R of Shakermaker single (Prepared by mastering engineer Chris Blair on 4th May 1994).
Source: eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=223168 Notes: I haven't heard this disc but I think, going by the date and the context, there's a chance it might contain Owen Morris's first mix of the song (not the 'Slide Up' mix on the Japanese reissue), complete with the "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" line.
The Shakermaker CD-R was mastered by Chris Blair at Abbey Road on 4/5/94 and Owen says that they re-recorded the third verse at Johnny Marr's Clear Studio, a couple of weeks after the original CD mastering session, in response to clearance issues regarding the Coke line.
According to the documentary on the Definitely Maybe DVD the vocal was re-done at Johnny Marr's Clear studios in Manchester, which was where Owen Morris mastered the album. I think it was at this late stage that the New Seekers threatened legal action over the similarity between Shakermaker and their song I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, which had been used in a 70s Coca-Cola advert. The objection was to Oasis's use of the line ‘I’d like to teach the world to sing/In perfect harmony/I’d like to buy the world a Coke/To keep it company’.
Paolo Hewitt notes in his book Getting High that the NME reported this rights issue on 21/5/94, with Noel saying he refuses to change the recording. On 28/5/94 Melody Maker published a Creation statement saying the line had never been recorded. Presumably the line had been re-recorded in the previous 7 days. Point being, the CD-R pre-dates the whole "Coca-cola line" saga by a couple of weeks at least.
8. Owen Morris mix of demo, with re-recorded third verse (released version) Here's a quote from Noel on the re-recording, from the Definitely Maybe DVD documentary:
Noel: ‘The only thing that’s not on the album is the verse with the ‘Coca-Cola’ line on it. Luckily enough we had an instrumental mix and me and Liam had to go to Johnny Marr’s studio in Manchester and…we were driving to the studio and Liam said ‘have you got a last verse?’ I didn’t have anything; not one fucking word did I have! And I said ‘no’. And he said ‘what are we going to sing when we get there?’ I said, ‘don’t worry about it man’. And we passed Sifter’s and we stopped at the traffic lights outside…and just sat in the back and wrote ['Mr Sifter sold me songs/When I was just sixteen/Now he stops at traffic lights/But only when they’re green']. So we went to Johnny’s studio; Liam sung it. It took about ten minutes. And that was that.’
Owen Morris recalled this session when I contacted him last year:
Owen: "[Oasis] had a mixed version of [Shakermaker] ready to go into production as the next single after Supersonic, but after I mixed Rock n Roll Star and Columbia, Marcus (on behalf of Noel, I guess) asked me to re-mix Shakermaker.
Liam re-recorded the 3rd verse in Johnny Marr's home studio. (when was the mastering? end April, beginning May 1994???) It was where I'd mastered Def Maybe.....and it was a couple of weeks after the mastering that we were told that the third verse had to be changed....for obvious publishing reasons. Liam and Noel turned up one morning, Noel had new words, I recorded Liam singing over an instrumental mix I'd put down of Shakermaker. He honestly sang it in one take. I matched the vocal level up with the rest of the mix (though the vocal sound changes slightly)....and edited just that verse into the album production master."
Note: We don't have an exact date for the CD mastering, but it must precede the recording of Sad Song (on 22/6/94) which was recorded to fill the gap created by re-cutting the vinyl edition over two discs, after an initial single-disc test pressing (delivered to the band on 4/6/94 - the date of the Charlatans gig mentioned in the vid below) was eventually found to be too thin-sounding. Those test pressings must be worth a few quid now, assuming any survived that party hehe...
For context, this work on Shakermaker leads into the final stages of the album's production:
-- Vinyl test pressing of Definitely Maybe delivered to the band on 4th June 1994. Found to be too "thin" sounding, so it's decided to re- cut the album over two discs and record a new song to make up the gap.
-- Sad Song recorded at the Windings Studio, on 22nd June 1994.
-- Vinyl edition successfully re-cut over two discs.

I think that's everything? There is another Noel tape from 1988/89, Be Here Now sessions and others I'm sure that maybe in private hands which haven't circulated for their own reasons but what is out there is quite a lot I must say!
Hi Jim, I am trying to put this set together. I am sure I have most of this stuff. However I am not clear on the 12 Definitely Maybe demos. When you get a moment could you tell me the sources for these. Their is just so much stuff I want to make sure I use the right tracks. Thanks!
